Uniosun:  We must resolve to stop avoidable disruptions in our university system -Oyetola

.Charges graduates to be good ambassadors

Osun State Governor, Adegboyega Oyetola, on Saturday, charged management of the state university and all stakeholders in the education sector, to ensure that incessant disruptions in the university calendar are done away with.

This is even as he said that the state government has so far demonstrated its commitment to rebuilding and repositioning education in the state, especially through improved funding of the sector.

He said his government would continue to support and invest in education and use the sector as a template and bedrock to impact on the lives of the people and advance the economy of the state.

Oyetola, who is the Visitor to the Osun State University (Uniosun) spoke at the institution's 8th convocation ceremonies.

He called for the overhauling of the nation's education sector, particularly the tertiary education which according to him has the capacity to rescue the country out of her present socioeconomic predicaments.

The governor, who harped on merit in the award of academic excellence and accolade, admonished ranks and files in the education sector on the need for them to pursue the lofty ideals of education that emphasise learning and character.

He further said: "As you are all aware, the certificates that you will receive from this university are awarded to you on the basis of character and learning. In the order of importance, character comes before learning. It is character that opened the door to knowledge and kept it open until you completed your courses and earned a degree.

"The world is replete with persons of talents, but is looking for persons of character who are in short supply. I therefore enjoin you to be good ambassadors of the university and the state by displaying the highest level of character anywhere you find yourselves.

"Your university and the state of Osun are waiting for you to enter into the World Hall of Fame in your chosen endeavours.

"Modern universities are cradles of knowledge for world order and sustainable development. I challenge the university to join the comity of global universities to adopt best practices in its operations. Let us resolve that never again will our university be part of unnecessary disruptions that rob the nation's universities of their competitive edge in the global arena.

"The university should find the resolve to continue to be and remain a centre of excellence. It has all it takes to be the best State University in Nigeria and use the achievement as a ladder to emerge the nation’s and Africa's best, “Oyetola added.

While congratulating the graduates, the governor tasked them to pursue things that could help to effect change and bring about positive impacts on the nation's economy.

"I congratulate the graduands here today for the successful completion of their programmes and graduation. They are young men and women who have been baked in the best tradition of Uniosun and whose lives and accomplishments hold great promise for the state, Nigeria, and the world.
"I also congratulate their parents and guardians for their huge investment in their children and wards and for donating them to the world.

"Distinguished graduands, there is no gain-saying the fact that this is a great day for you as you have transited from the class of students to responsible persons who are ready to shape and transform the world.

"Your university has imbued you with analytical skills, competencies, knowledge, attitude and character during your years of study. The world is waiting for you to employ all these to contribute to humanity and improve the society,” the governor added.

He said the boards will serve as a driven force towards the actualisation of the government’s goal at taking quality healthcare to the people's doorsteps.

The governor further said: “To underscore the importance we placed on the health of our people, our administration promptly inaugurated the Special Health Intervention and Revitalisation Committee after assuming office.

"The Special Health Intervention and Revitalisation Committee has worked assiduously to implement its mandate which includes renovation of healthcare centres, provision of equipment and drugs, training and retraining of staff and use of technology to power the healthcare services of the General Hospitals and healthcare centres.

"Government has engaged political leaders with responsibility for constituency projects, philanthropists and religious organisations to support the implementation of SSHIS to achieve Universal Health Coverage in Osun.

"We have engaged in all these initiatives and programmes to pave the way for the effective take-off and administration of the Board we are inaugurating today.

"Today's inauguration marks the effective take-off of the health programme of our administration.

"Health is wealth and it is the driver of all that we do as a government. Equitable health service delivery is at the forefront of the core cardinal objectives of our administration.

"In particular, the inauguration of the Governing Board of the State Primary healthcare Board is one of the key indices for the assessment of primary healthcare under one roof through which the state can benefit some funds from Saving One Million Lives. This inauguration is therefore germane to the success of the activities of the State Primary Healthcare Board.

"I enjoin you to regard your appointments as service to your state and a measure of the confidence government reposes in you.

"You must ensure that you give this duty your best. Discharge your duties with a high sense of responsibility, probity, selflessness, commitment and diligence. "We will work towards making people realise that health of the people is paramount to this government under your able leadership. No doubt, your government is destined for greatness. You would recall sir that the election that brought you to power was slated to hold on 22nd but it was later extended to 27 which is the day Osun was created.

"Incidentally, the day you were going to present your budget was postponed to 27 as well. You would agree with me that this coincidence is magical. I believe that by the end of this tenure, which by the grace of God, will be eight years, your name will be written in gold and people will never forget the role you have played in their lives".

Osun: Akande birthed legacy of prudent, transparent management of resources -Oyetola

Osun: Akande birthed legacy of prudent, transparent management of resources -Oyetola

Osun State Governor, Adegboyega Oyetola, has described the former interim National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Chief Adebisi Akande, as an encyclopaedia of governance and statesmanship whose virtues are worthy of emulation.

He also said Osun was proud to donate his politics, economics and governance dynamics to a nation striving to emplace visionary and dynamic leadership, adding that it was Akande who birthed the legacy of prudent and transparent management of men and resources in the state.

Governor Oyetola stated these on Thursday, in Lagos, at the public presentation of the book titled "The Bisi Akande Phenomenon: Governance, Economics and Politics", held at the Jelili Adebisi Omotola Hall C, University of Lagos, Akoka.

He commended Akande, who was also a former governor of the state, for his immense contributions to nation building and national integration.

Describing the book as a collection of the illustrious contributions of Akande to the building of the political edifice called Nigeria; Governor Oyetola added that Akande is a model for contemporary politicians, youths, and school children who the nation looks up to as its hope.

"His life, politics, philosophy, leadership dynamics and lifestyle accurately exemplify him as an outstanding Omoluabi and a phenomenon in the nation’s budding democracy.

"Akande represents everything Osun stands for, and radiates the honour and statesmanship our nation exudes.

"Baba Awon Omo Kekeke (father of small children), as he is fondly called is a metaphor for the future of Osun and Nigeria.

"He radiates vision, discipline, dynamism, industry and honour, which we require to overcome the raging rot to become a great player in the competitive world. This Octogenarian was a compendium of wisdom during the opposition days of the progressives and even now, a formidable guide while in power.

"Since his tutelage under the late sage, Chief Obafemi Awolowo, Chief Akande has remained a potent voice in politics, governance and the economy. He is also widely known as a bridge between the North and the South in a nation immersed in ethnic and rotational politics.

"These rare attributes make him a phenomenon, a quintessential politician and a unifying force in a country where centrifugal forces are always gnawing at its political and economic soul.

“A visionary and dynamic leader, Chief Akande remains the architect of our beloved state, having laid a solid foundation which his successors have built on in all the sectors to announce the state to the world.

“Chief Akande birthed the legacy of prudent and transparent management of men and resources. Despite Osun’s status as one of the resource-challenged states in the country, Chief Akande employed his skills as a creative manager to build structures and institutions in a manner that dwarfed the achievements of resource-studded states in the nation.

“As students of Chief Akande’s politico-economics, we owe a huge debt of gratitude to the author of the book for codifying the activities and milestones of our principal into a compendium for us and the generations yet unborn to appropriately build bricks on the foundation that will take our fatherland to the Promised Land.

“As Baba's governor, I express the gratitude of the good people of of Osun to Baba Akande for living an exemplary life worthy of emulation. Thank you Baba, for becoming an Encyclopaedia of governance and statesmanship.

“We are proud to donate Baba Akande, his politics, his economics and his governance dynamics to a nation striving to emplace visionary and dynamic leadership,” Oyetola said.

Oyetola seeks France’s support on vocational education

.

Osun State Governor Adegboyega Oyetola has solicited the support of France in the development of vocational education to tackle unemployment in the state.

Oyetola made the request when France Ambassador to Nigeria, Mr Jerome Pasquier, and his team, paid a courtesy visit to the governor on Tuesday in Osogbo.

The governor said that the support of France in vocational education would assist the state in producing more people with business skills who would be self-employed.

“The conventional education as good as it is does not give skills.

“We are turning out so many graduates who are not skilled and that is why we are looking at training more people to acquire skills, and in turn set up their own businesses,” the governor said.

Oyetola, who noted that white collar jobs were no longer available, said it was not possible for government alone to absorb all unemployed youths.
